Solution

Let the two numbers be x and y,
given that,
x- y =4
x = y + 4 -----(i)
and
1 over y minus 1 over x equals 4 over 21 fraction numerator x minus y over denominator x y end fraction equals 4 over 21 fraction numerator 4 over denominator x y end fraction equals 4 over 21 x y equals 21
From (i)
left parenthesis y plus 4 right parenthesis y equals 21
y squared plus 4 y minus 21 equals 0 y squared plus 7 y minus 3 y minus 21 equals 0 y left parenthesis y plus 7 right parenthesis minus 3 left parenthesis y plus 7 right parenthesis equals 0 left parenthesis y minus 3 right parenthesis left parenthesis y plus 7 right parenthesis equals 0 y equals 3 comma negative 7
So, when y = 3; x = y+ 4 = 7

Or, when y = -7; x = y+ 4 = -3
