Let the other number $=x$

According to the question,

$x-\frac{1}{3}=\frac{5}{9}$

or $x=\frac{5}{9}+\frac{1}{3}$

$=\frac{5}{9}+\frac{1\times 3}{3\times 3}$

$=\frac{5+3}{9}=\frac{8}{9}$

$\therefore$ the other number is $\frac{8}{9}$
