Question

The dipole moments of CCl4CHCl3andCH4 are in order.

Solution

Dipole moments of hydrohalocarbons :

  • The dipole moments of CCl4CHCl3andCH4are in the order: CHCl3>CCl4=CH4.
  • As in both, tetrachloromethane and methane have the same type of groups attached to central carbon thus their dipole moments will be nill.
  • But in the case of trichloromethane, there is a difference in the entities attached to central carbon resulting in a value of dipole moment.
  • Hence CHCl3 will have high dipole moments than the other two.
