Sickle cell anaemia is a hereditary blood disorder characterised by an abnormality in the haemoglobin molecule in the red blood cells. There is a mutation in the β- globin gene which results in alteration of the structure of haemoglobin. This protein is responsible for carrying oxygen in red blood cells. Due to this abnormal haemoglobin, the red blood cells becomes sickle-shaped and clump with the other red blood cells, causing blood to clot throughout the body. This affects the supply of blood to organs in the body.
