Goiter:

  1. It is the enlargement of the thyroid gland due to inflammation.
  2. It occurs as a lump in front of the neck which moves up and down when one swallows.
  3. Iodine is essential for the production of thyroid hormones.
  4. If there is a deficiency of iodine, the pituitary gland signals the thyroid gland to make more hormones which results in an increase in the size of the thyroid gland.
