Question

The distance between two stations A and B is 540 km. Two trains start simultaneously from these stations on parallel tracks to cross each other. The speed of one of them is greater than the other by 5km/ hr. If the distance between these two trains after 3 hrs of their start is 165 km, what is the speed of each train?

Solution

Let speed of slower train = X kmph
Speed of faster train = (X + 5) kmph

Distance between the trains = 165 km
Time = 3 hrs
Since both trains travel towards each other (opposite directions),
Relative speed = X + X+5 = 2X + 5

Distance/Speed = Time
165/(2X + 5) = 3
165 = 6X + 15
6X = 150
X=25 kmph

Speed of slower train = 25 kmph
Speed of faster train = 30 kmph
