Question

The distribution of the size of certain farms in a taluka (tehsil) is given below.
Size of farm (in acres) 5-15 15-25 25-35 35-45 45-55 55-65 65-75
No. of farms 7 12 17 25 31 5 3

Find the median size of the farms.

Solution

For the calculation of median, we need to prepare the cumulative frequency distribution (less than type)
table as shown.
Size of farm (in acres) Frequency fi Cumulative frequency (less than type)
5-15 7 7
15-25 12 19
25-35 17 36c.f
35-45 25f 61
45-55 31 92
55-65 5 97
65-75 3 100

Total frequency = fi = N =100N2 = 1002 = 50So, the cumulative frequency should be just greater than or equal to 50, i.e. 61.Therefore, the median class will be 35-45.Median = L+N2-c.f.hfHere, L = lower limit of the median class = 35c.f. = cumulative frequency of the class preceeding the median class = 36h = width of the median class = 10f = frequency of the median class = 25Median = 35+50-361025 = 35+14×0.4=35+5.6= 40.6Median size of the farms is 40.60 acres.
