Question

The domain of the function fx4-x+1x2-1 is equal to
(a) (−∞, −1) ∪ (1, 4)
(b) (−∞, −1] ∪ (1, 4]
(c) (−∞, −1) ∪ [1, 4]
(d) (−∞, −1) ∪ [1, 4)

Solution

f(x)=4-x + 1x2-1
for 4-x
4 − x ≥ 0
i.e 4 ≥ x
i.e x ≤ 4
and 1x2-1
Since x2 − 1 > 0 x2-1=0 is not defined for 1x2-1
i.e x2 > 1
i.e x < − 1 or x > 1

for 4-x + 1x2-1, Domain is (–∞, –1) ∪ (1, 4].
