Question

The drift velocity of free electrons through a conducting wire of radius r, carrying current I, is vd. If the same current is passed through a conductor of radius 2r. What will be the drift velocity?

Open in App
Solution

i=neAv

where v is drift velocity

A is cross sectional area

So A=pi r²

i = ne pi r² v

v =i/ne pi r²

Case. . . One - r is r

v=i/ne pi r². . . . . . . Equation one

Case. . . . two - ris doubled

v¹=i/ne pi (2r)²

v¹=i/ne pi 4r²

From one

v¹=v/4

So. The drift velocity becomes 1/4
