The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development or the Earth Summit was held in 1992 and resulted in 3 different agreements:
  • UNFCCC which in itself was non-binding but subsequent protocols like Kyoto Protocol have been adopted which are linked to UNFCCC and are binding.
  • The Convention on Biological Diversity was also adopted which had 3 important components - the protection of biological diversity, sustainable use of its components, and fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising out of genetic resources.
