Question

The effective resistances are 10Ω,2.4Ω when two resistors are connected in series and parallel respectively. What are the resistances of individual resistors?

Open in App
Solution

Given RS=10Ω;RP=2.4Ω;R1=?;R2=?
Solution:
Effective resistance when connected in series and parallel.
RS=R1+R2=10 ............(1)
1RP=1R1+1R2=R1+R2R1R2

RP=R1R2R1+R2=2.4 ............(2)

From egn (1) and (2)
R1R210=2.4
R1R2=24
R2=24R1
Substituting R2 in eqn (1)
R1+24R1=10;R21+24=10R1
R2110R1+24=0
(R16)(R14)=0
R1=6Ω or R1=4Ω
R2=246 or R2=244
=4Ω. or =6Ω
R1=6Ω,R2=4Ω.
