Question

The electric field intensity of plane wave propagating in unknown medium is given by
E=E0e0.4πzcos(2π×105t0.4πz)^axV/m.
ldentify the medium in which the plane wave is propagating?

Solution

Given E=E0e0.4πzcos(2π×105t0.4πz)^ax

direction of propagation : +z

attenuation constant,α=0.4πN/m

phase shift constant,β=0.4πr/m

α=β=0.4π

Note: When the wave is traveling in a good conductor, both attenuation constant α and phase shift constantβ are numerically equal.

As α and β of the given wave are same 0.4π and hence the wave istraveling in a good conductor.
