When the electricity comes into the house, it first of all goes through a meter to measure how many units, that is, kWh, of electrical energy is used. After the meter, the electricity goes through the main switch, which can be used to cut off the electricity supply altogether if, for instance, repairs and changes have to be made to the wiring.
