Question

The electrode potential measures the ________________.

Open in App
Solution

Electrode potential:

  1. The tendency of a metal to get oxidised or reduced when it is placed in a solution of its own salt is known as electrode potential.
  2. When a metal [M] is placed in a solution containing its own ions [Mn+], then the metal may undergo either oxidation or reduction.
  3. If the metal undergoes oxidation, then the positive metal ions may pass into the solution, MMn++ne-.
  4. If the metal undergoes reduction, then the negative ions may get deposited over the metal, Mn++ne-M
  5. When unity is the concentration of all the species involved in a semi-cell, the electrode potential is known as the standard electrode potential.
  6. The value of electrode potential developed on an electrode will depend upon the concentration of ions in solution, the temperature of the system, the chemical nature of the metal or nonmetal, and the number of electrons transferred in the half cell reactions.
  7. The value of electrode potential does not depend on the electrode.

Therefore, the electrode potential measures the tendency of the electrode to get oxidized or reduced.
