Question

The electrolysis of acetate solution produces ethane according to reaction:
2CH3COOC2H6(g)+2CO2(g)+2e

The current efficiency of the process is 80%. What volume of gases would be produced at 27C and 740 torr, if the current of 0.5 amp is passed through the solution of 96.45 min?

Solution

The correct option is D 0.91L
From reaction, it can be seen that 2 mole of the electron produces 3 mol of gases.

Here, charge =0.5×0.8×96.45×60=2314.8 coulomb.

So volume of gases produces 1.5×2314.8×22.4/96500=0.815L.

So volume of gases at 740 torr is V2V1=P1P2 at constant temperature.

So V2=0.815×760740=0.84L
