Question

The electrostatic force on a metal sphere of charge 0.4 μC due to another identical metal sphere of charge 0.8 μC in air is 0.2N. Find the distance between the two spheres and also the force between the same two spheres when they are brought into contact and then replaced in their initial positions.

Solution

Given two identical spheres having charges: q1=0.44C
q2=0.84C
Force between them, F=0.2N
i) To find distance between then two spheres:
We use Coulomb's Law, F=14πε0q1q2r2
r2=14πε0q1q2F=9×109×0.4×0.8×10120.2
=14.4×103
=144×104
So, r=12×102m
where, r= distance of separation between two spheres.

ii) We have to find force between same two spheres when brought in contact and placed at same positions.
So, when the two spheres are brought in contact; charge on each sphere is Q=0.4+0.82μC=0.6μC

So, now force is =14πε0Q2r2
=9×109×(0.6×106)2144×104
=9×109×0.36×1012144×104
=0.0225×10=0.225N
