The elements at the bottom of the group expected to show_______________metallic character than the element at the top (less, more)

Solution

  1. As we move across a group in a periodic table, atomic size increases.
  2. With the increase in atomic size, the distance of outermost electrons from the nucleus increases.
  3. Hence the force of attraction between electron and nucleus decreases.
  4. Therefore, the tendency to donate electrons increases, and metallic character increases.
  5. For example in group 1 Lithium is the top element and Caesium(Cs) is the bottom element and hence Cs is more metallic than Lithium

The elements at the bottom of the group are expected to show more metallic character than the element at the top
