The elements of the second period of the Periodic Table are given Identify the most
Metallic and Nonmetallic element.
Metallic and Non-metallic elements:
The tendency to lose electrons decreases on moving from left to right along a period, thereby leading to a decrease in the metallic character. Also, the oxides of metals are basic in nature, while those of nonmetals are acidic in nature.
Metallic element:
• If the elements lose electrons and form positive ions or cations it exhibits the metallic characters.
• As Li is placed on the farthest left of the second period, it has the highest metallic character.
Non-metallic element:
• If the elements gain electrons and form negative ions or anions it exhibits the non-metallic characters.
• As is placed in the farthest right of the second period, it has the highest non-metallic character.
