The elements $X$ and $Y$ form two compounds, $X Y_{2}$ and $X_{3} Y_{2}$ . $0.1$ mol of former weighs $10$ g while $0.05$ mole of the latter weighs $9$ g. Find the atomic weight of $X$ .

$X + 2 Y \to X Y_{2}$
$0.1$ mol of $X Y_{2} = 10 g$
$1$ mol of $X Y_{2} = 100 g$
$3 X + 2 Y \to X_{3} Y_{2}$
$0.05$ mol of $X_{3} Y_{2} = 9 g$

$1$ mol of $X_{3} Y_{2} = \frac{9}{0.05} = 180 g$

$∴ X + 2 Y = 100; M W_{X Y_{2}} = 100$
$3 X + 2 Y = 180; M W_{X_{2} Y_{3}} = 180$
Solving for $X$ and $Y$ , we get, $X = 40 g$ and $Y = 30 g$ .
