The embryo sac in higher plants represents as mega gametophyte. An eight-celled megagametophyte called the embryo sac produces the egg. Megaspore mother cell is the diploid cell which undergoes meiosis to form four haploid megaspores. Three of the megaspores degenerate and one remains functional. Embryo sac or the female gametophyte is formed from the functional megaspore by the process of megagametogenesis. The nucellus is the central part of the ovule in which embryo sac is present. Nucellus forms bulk of the ovule and has a nutritive function. Thus, megagametophyte of angiosperms is represented by the embryo sac.
