Question

The empirical formula of an acid is CH2O. 0.0835 moles of the compound contains 1g of hydrogen. Molecular formula of the compound is ___

Open in App
Solution

Let the Molecular formula of carbohydrate be equal to (CH2O)n

In 1 mole of carbohydrate there is 2n x 1 = 2n g of hydrogen present

So, 0.0833 mole of carbohydrate there is 2n×0.0833 g of hydrogen which is equal to 1 g (From the question).

2n x 0.0833 = 1

or n = 6

So the Molecular Formula of carbohydrate is = (CH2O)6 = C6H12O6
