This is followed by cannizzaro reaction of 4-(2,2,2-trihydroxyacetyl)benzaldehyde with one molecule of formaldehyde to obtain 2,2,2-trihydroxy-1-(4-(hydroxymethyl)phenyl)ethanone and sodium formate.
