Question

The enzyme carbonic anhydrase catalyzes the hydration of CO2. This reaction: CO2+H2OH2CO3, is involved in the transfer of CO2 from tissues to the lungs via the bloodstream.
One enzyme molecule hydrates 106 molecules of CO2 per second. How many kgs of CO2 are hydrated in one hour in one liter by 1×16M enzyme?

Solution

number of molecule of CO2 hydrated by enzyme in one hour =10(6)×3600
Number of mole CO2 hydrated by 10(6)×Na enzyme in one hour =3600×Na
Let the weight of CO2 be xg
then x=3600×Na×44Na=158400g=158.4Kg
