  • When a base reacts with an acid, then salt and Water are formed. Such reactions are known as neutralization reactions.
  • Example: When Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) reacts with Hydrochloric acid (HCl), then Sodium chloride (NaCl) and Water are formed. The equation is:

NaOH(aq)+HCl(aq)NaCl(aq)+H2O(l)

  • The salt formed in the neutralization reaction consists of the positively charged ion (cation) of a base and the negatively charged ion (anion) of an acid.
  • The salt formed in the reaction between NaOH and HCl is NaCl. The salt NaCl consist of a Sodium cation (Na+) which is positively charged and Chloride anion (Cl-).
  • The Sodium cation comes from the base NaOH while the Chloride anion comes from the acid HCl.
  • In the given reaction XOH is a base, HY is an acid and XYis a salt.
  • XYconsists of X+cation which comes from base XOH and Y- anion which comes from acid HY. Hence, the cation part of salt is X.
