Question

The equation given below relate to the manufacture fo sodium carbonate (molecular weight of Na2CO3=106).
1. NaCl+NH3+CO2+H2ONaHCO3+NH4C
2. 2NaHCO3Na2CO3+H2O+CO2
Equations (1) and (2) are based on the production of 21.2 g of sodium carbonate.
(a) What mass of sodium hydrogen carbonate must be heated to give 21.2 g of sodium carbonate?
(b) To produce the mass of sodium hydrogen carbonate calculated in (a) what volume of carbon dioxide, measured at STP, would be required?

Solution

a) 2NaHCO3Na2CO3
2 x 84 =168 106

For obtaining 106g of Na2CO3 amount of NaHCO3 heated = 168g.
therefore for obtaining 21.2 g of Na2CO3 amount ofN a H C O subscript 3 heated = 168 over 106 cross times 21.2 equals 33.6 g

b) NaHCO3CO2
84g 22.4 litre

84 g of N a H C O subscript 3 at S.T.P 22.4 litre ofC O subscript 2
33.6 g ofN a H C O subscript 3at S.T.P =fraction numerator 22.4 over denominator 84 end fraction cross times 33.6 equals 8.96 L
