Question

The equation of lines L1 and L2 are y=mx and y=nx, respectively. Suppose L1 makes twice as large of an angle with the horizontal (measured counterclockwise from the positive x-axis) as does L2 and that L1 has 4 times the slope of L2. If L1 is not horizontal, then the value of the product (mn) equals:

Solution

The correct option is C 2
Given the equation of L1 is y=mx ....... (1) and that of L2 is y=nx ........ (2)
Now, the angle made by (1) with the positive direction of x-axis is tan1m and that made by line (2) is tan1n.
Now, according to the problem,
tan1m=2tan1n
or, tan1m=tan12n1n2
or, m=2n1n2........(1).
Again, by the problem m=4n.
Using this in (3) we get,
4n=2n1n2
or, n2=12.
Now, mn=4n2=4×12=2.
