Let y =mx+c be a common tangent of hyperbolas
x2a2y2b2=1............(i)and y2a2x2b2=1............(ii)
Condition of tangency for Eq. (i) is
c2=a2m2b2................(iii)
and condition of tangency for Eq. (ii) is
c2=a2b2m2.........................(iv)
From Eqs. (iii) and (iv),
a2m2b2=a2b2m2a2(m21)+b2(m21)=0(a2+b2)(m21)=0a2+b20m21=0m=±1FromEq.(iii), c2=a2b2c=±(a2b2)
