The exchange of gases during respiration and photosynthesis take place by ______.

(osmosis/diffusion)

Solution

Respiration and Photosynthesis in plants:

  • There are two types of respiration in plants: Aerobic and Anaerobic (depending on the presence and absence of oxygen respectively).
  • Respiration is the process in which glucose breaks down in the presence of oxygen to release carbon dioxide gas along with water molecules and energy.
  • Photosynthesis on the other hand is the process by which plants makes glucose. It is a process where green plants in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll takes up carbon dioxide and water to make glucose and releases oxygen gas as a by-product.

Diffusion:

  • Diffusion is a process where gases, liquids and solids move freely from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration.
  • During photosynthesis, carbon dioxide gas diffuses from the air to the leaves through stomata and vice-versa in respiration.
  • It happens because the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is higher in comparison to the leaves of plants. Hence, diffusion takes place to restore the equilibrium in the leaves.

Final answer:

The exchange if gases during respiration and photosynthesis takes place by diffusion.
