Monomial can be defined as algrebraic expression consisting one term.
Binomial can be defined as algrebraic expression consisting two terms.
Trinomial can be defined as algrebraic expression consisting three terms.

(x+y)2can be written as (x+y)(x+y)
= x(x+y)+y(x+y)
= x2 + xy + xy +y2
Add like terms and we get:
= x2 + 2xy + y2
Rearrange the terms and we get:
= x2 + y2+ 2xy
