Question

The eyes of a certain member of the reptile family pass a visual signal to the brain when the visual receptors are struck by photons of wavelength 850 nm. If a total energy of 3.15×1014 J isrequired to trip the signal, the minimum number of photons that must strike the receptor is x×105photons, find x. (h=6.6×1034 J s). Report the value upto two decimal.

Solution

We know that, Total energy=n×Energy of one photon
Energy of one photon=hcλ

3.15×1014 J=n×(6.6×1034 J s)(3×108 m/s)850×109 m

n=1.35×105
