Question

The family in which argon and neon belongs _____

Open in App
Solution

Inert gases

According to the modern periodic table,

  • Inert gases or noble gases are elements of group 18. The elements in group 18 (inert gases) are Helium (He), Neon (Ne), Argon (Ar), Krypton (Kr), Xenon (Xe), Radon (Rn) etc.
  • Inert gases have a filled electronic configuration with 8 electrons in their outermost shell (except helium which has 2 electrons in its outermost shell).
  • Inert gases have zero valencies because their outermost shells are filled. So, they neither lose nor gain electrons.
  • They are known as inert gases because they do not take part in reactions due to their octet configuration.

Thus, argon and neon belong to the family of Inert gases.
