The figure below shows a uniform rod of length 30 cm having a mass of 3.0 kg. The strings as shown in the figure are pulled by constant forces of 20 N and 32 N. Find the force exerted by the 20 cm part of the rod on the 10 cm part. All the surfaces are smooth, and the strings are light.

The correct option is C 24 N
The 20 cm part of rod will pull the 10 cm part.

Let the force exerted be F.

Considering rod as system

Using second law of motion

Fnet = ma

(3220) = 3a

a =123 = 4 m/s2

Now from the FBD of 10 cm part of rod.


Mass of rod is 3 kg, thus mass per unit length λ is given by

λ =330 kg/cm

mass of 10 cm part will be

m1=330×10=1 kg

Applying second law,

F20=ma

F20=1×4F=24 N

Ans. D
