In metaphase I, homologous chromosomes lie side by side along the equatorial plate. The two members of each homologous pair of chromosomes are attached to the spindle fibres from opposite poles. In this figure, either chromosome of the homologous pair is attached to the spindle fibres originating from the opposite poles. Hence, it is metaphase I.

Anaphase I of meiosis is characterised by the separation of homologous chromosomes of a pair as they move towards the opposite poles.

In anaphase of meiosis II, the sister chromatids of a chromosome migrate towards the opposite poles. This is similar to anaphase of mitosis.
