The ocelli are the type of photoreceptors that are present in the cockroaches and works to perceive light conditions.

The compound eyes of cockroaches are large, black, and kidney-shaped. It is situated dorsolaterally on the head.

Mandible or true jaws are two dark, hard chitinous structures with serrated margins which form the teeth and are placed below the labium on either side of the mouth. These help in cutting and crushing the food.

Maxillae or accessory jaws are paired appendages situated on either side of the mouth behind the mandibles. It brings the food to the mandibles for mastication.

Labium or lower lip is also known as second maxillae which cover the mouth from the ventral side and is firmly attached to the posterior part of the head. It is useful in pushing the chewed food in the preoral cavity and also prevents the loss of food falling from mandibles during chewing.

Labrum or upper lip is a flap-like or shield-like movable structure that covers the mouth from the upper side. It holds the food during feeding.
