Visceral pleura - Outermost membrane
Parietal pleura - Innermost membrane
The lungs are separated from the chest wall by two membranes called pleura. The outermost membrane (A) is called the parietal pleura and is attached to the chest wall. The innermost membrane (B) is called the visceral pleura and is attached to the outer surface of the lungs. Both the pleura secrete a serous fluid called pleural fluid. The pleural fluid fills the space in between both pleura, called the pleural cavity (C). The diaphragm (D) is a dome-shaped muscle that contracts to increase the volume of the thoracic cavity.
