Inhalation:
The process of intake of atmospheric air is known as inhalation.
When the volume of the thoracic cavity increases and the air pressure decreases, inhalation takes place.
Contraction of rib muscles pulls the ribs upward and outward which increases the volume of the thoracic cavity.
The size of the thoracic cavity also increases due to the contraction of the diaphragm.
Due to the increase in the volume of the thoracic cavity, the air pressure inside the lungs decreases and air rushes inside.

The trachea, also known as the windpipe, functions as the airway and connects the larynx to the bronchi of the lungs.

Ribs are present in the thoracic cavity and are responsible for the protection of the lungs.
The contraction and relaxation of the rib cage help in the process of breathing.
