The chemical substances produced by certain micro-organisms that kill or retard the growth of disease-causing microbes are called antibiotics. Antibiotics are used to treat deadly diseases such as plague, whooping cough (kali khansi), diphtheria (gal ghotu) and leprosy (kusht rog).

Penicillin is the first antibiotic discovered by Alexander Fleming. It was a chance discovery. While working with Staphylococci bacteria, he noticed that the bacteria could not grow in the presence of some chemical produced by the mould Penicillium notatum. Hence, he named it penicillin after the mould Penicillium notatum. Though Penicillin was discovered by Fleming, its full potential as an effective antibiotic was established by Ernest Chain and Howard Florey. This antibiotic was used extensively to treat the soldiers in World War II. For this significant discovery, Fleming, Chain and Florey were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1945

Penicillium notatum belongs to the kingdom Fungi. All members of this kingdom are eukaryotic. With the exception of yeast, all organisms included in the kingdom Fungi are multicellular. Hence, Penicillium notatum is multicellular and eukaryotic.

Prokaryotes are included in the kingdom Monera. The prokaryotes lack a well-defined nucleus and membrane bound cell organelles. All prokaryotes are unicellular.
