Abiogenesis of complex organic compounds in primitive sea was followed by formation of large spherical colloidal aggregates of macromolecules, the coacervates that remain suspended as droplets in seawater. The associated colloidal particles removed intervening water by dehydration/opposite charge attraction and maintained a simple but persistent organization. Aggregation of fat/lipid molecules formed a coating membrane around each coacervate to hold the colloidal particles together thereby facilitating chemical reactions among them. Coacervates served as site for synthesis of RNA, DNA and protein. Chemosynthesis of self replicating nucleic acids and proteins followed by aggregation of proteins and nucleic acid resulted in origin of first life form. Also known as protovirus, eobiont or protocell, the first life forms were prokaryotic chemoheterotrophic nucleoproteins surrounded by lipid bilayer. RNA served as genetic material and catalyst in early protocells; proteins took over the catalytic function of RNA with due course of time.
