Early earth was devoid of oxygen, though it contained many elements like hydrogen, methane, ammonia, water vapour, etc. The first living organisms originated among organic molecules and in oxygen free atmosphere(reducing atmosphere). They presumably obtained energy by the fermentation of some of these organic molecules. They required readymade organic materials as food and thus they were chemoheterotrophs.
