Meiosis is a type of cell division that occurs in the reproductive cells of sexually reproducing organisms. It is completed in two stages - meiosis I and meiosis II.
Meiosis I: In this phase, the parent cell divides to give two daughter cells with half the number of chromosomes. Since the chromosome number gets halved in the daughter cells, this type of division is called reduction division.
Meiosis II: This phase resembles mitosis. The two daughter cells divide without replication of DNA content. The two sister chromatids of a chromosome get divided into two daughter cells and thus the chromosome count of the cells remains the same after the division. This type of cell division is known as equational division.
