Stanley Cohen and his coworkers in 1973 isolated a plasmid called pSC101 which had a gene for tetracycline resistance in it. They exposed this plasmid to restriction digestion by EcoRI and introduced kanamycin resistance gene into the cut plasmid. This recombinant plasmid was introduced into E. coli cells and successfully transformed cells showed dual resistance to kanamycin and tetracycline.
