The following points supports the proposition that how language policy was the major test of India's Federalism and has paved the way for peaceful coexistence.
Language policy of India:
a. There is no national language as recognised by the Constitution of India.
b. Hindi has been considered as the official language and the Constitution provides safeguards to protect other languages.
c. For instance, besides Hindi, there are 21 other languages are recognised as Scheduled Languages by the Constitution.
d. States have their own official languages.
e. The Union government provides for joint use of English and Hindi for official purposes.
f. Such a flexibility has allowed for recognition of diverse languages and has also prevented imposition of the major language spoken in our country.
