The following diagram refers to an apparatus which is used to demonstrate a physiological process:
(b) Why has the coloured water risen in tubing 1

Solution
Germinating seeds undergo respiration, utilizes all the oxygen to generate carbon dioxide in test tube 1 which is absorbed by potassium hydroxide due to which a vacuum is created.
This vacuum space sucks the water from the coloured water flask and hence the level of the water rises in test tube 1.
The increase in the level of water is a sign of respiration taking place.
