Solution

The correct option is B Agarose gel electrophoresis

Polymerase chain reaction
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a technique used for the in vitro amplification of the DNA fragments or gene of interest to create multiple copies.

Agarose gel electrophoresis
Agarose gel electrophoresis is the technique involving the separation of molecules based on their size and charge. For example, it is used for the separation of DNA fragments formed after treatment with endonucleases, based on their size and negative charge.

Process of agarose gel electrophoresis

The given figure represents the gel electrophoresis technique and the process of agarose gel electrophoresis is as follows:

  • The DNA fragments and size markers are loaded onto the gel well and current is passed through the gel.
  • The DNA being negatively charged, moves towards the positive electrode during gel electrophoresis.
  • The smaller the size of the molecule, the faster and farther it travels and the fragments are separated.
Downstream processing
After the biosynthetic phase, the recombinant products are separated and purified by the process called downstream processing. It involves the purification of the desired product, its packaging and marketing.

Biolistic or gene gun
Biolistic or gene gun is a method of transfer of genes in cells. In this technique, gold particles are coated with nucleic acids such as DNA and bombarded into cells at very high speed. It is the most widely used method to deliver foeign DNA in plant cells because of the presence of an additional membrane and cell wall in plants.

Final answer
(b) Agarose gel electrophoresis
