Solution

The correct option is B

1·5%

Step 1: Given data

Diameter of capillary, D=1·25×10-2m

Rise of water,h=1.45×10-2m

Acceleration due to gravity g=9.80m/s2

Relation between mentioned parameter T=rhg2×103Nm-1

Step 2: Modify the relation

The relationship equation of surface tension can be written as follows,

T=rhg2×103Nm-1

multiplyanddivideitby2T=2rhg4×103Nm-1

We know that D=2r. So,

T=Dhg4×103----1

Step 3: Determine the percentage error

Take the log of equation 1,

logT=logDhg4×103logT=logD+logh+logg-log4+log3

It is understood that,

TT=DD+hh. So,

The least count in the measurement of D would be D=0.01×10-2m

Similarly, The least count in the measurement of h would be h=0.01×10-2m

TT=0·01×10-21·25×10-2+0·01×10-21·45×10-2TT=0·015TT×100=1·5%

Therefore, the maximum error would be 1·5%

Hence, option B is the correct answer.
