1. Tympanum- Middle ear with a single auditory ossicle is present in addition to the internal ear. Tympanum covers the middle ear. It first appear in amphibians.

In amniotes (but not in amphibians) it also articulates with ribs to form a thoracic basket which is protective and aids in breathing.
