The higher the energy, the more the particles or rays produced by radioactive decay would penetrate a substance.
  • Alpha particles have the least penetrating power. They cannot penetrate through air for more than 8-10 cm, and can easily be obstructed by a thin paper or skin.
  • Beta particles have more penetrating power than alpha particles, up to a few metres in air, but are easily obstructed by a thick cardboard or any metal sheet.
  • Gamma rays have the most penetrating power, up to a few hundred metres in air. They can only be stopped by concrete or lead walls of thickness of a few feet.
