Open in App
Solution

Bauxite is amphoteric oxide. It dissolves in NaOH solution i.e caustic alkali. But other impurities that are present such as Fe2O3 and SiO2 are not amphoteric in nature and hence will not dissolve in caustic alkali. So caustic alkali is used.
