State the reason for addition of caustic alkali to bauxite ore during purification of bauxite.

Bauxite is amphoteric oxide. It dissolves in $N a O H$ solution i.e caustic alkali. But other impurities that are present such as $F e_{2} O_{3}$ and $S i O_{2}$ are not amphoteric in nature and hence will not dissolve in caustic alkali. So caustic alkali is used.
