In the adult human heart, there is complete separation of deoxygenated and oxygenated blood. The left side of the heart contains oxygenated blood whereas the right part of the heart contains deoxygenated blood. The left auricle (label 5) receives oxygenated blood from a pulmonary vein. The oxygenated blood is passed on to the left ventricle (label 6) through the mitral valve. The left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood to the body through the aorta (label 3).
