Question

The following questions relate to the extraction of Aluminium by electrolysis:
(a) Name the other Aluminium containing compound added to Alumina and state its significance.

Solution

  • The electrolytic mixture, Cryolite (Na3AlF6), and Fluorspar are also added to lower the fusing temperature, improve the mixture's conductivity, and improve mobility.
  • Bauxite is the most common resource used to extract Aluminium.

Significances are as follows;

  • Cryolite boosts electrolyte conductivity while lowering the electrolytic cell's working temperature.
  • Alumina is dissolved in Molten cryolite (Na3AlF6), which decreases the fusion temperature from and2050C to 950C improves conductivity.
  • The melting point of a combination of Cryolite and Aluminium oxide is lower than that of pure Aluminium oxide.
